ANTH 211                                                                                     Week 3 Paper – Summer 2021            

                                               

How has Hawaii’s history of colonialism shaped inequality and health for native Hawaiians? Why can this be understood as a case of structural violence? How does access to the land shape Native Hawaiian Health and what do they mean by land-based health? How do shifting perspectives on the body illustrate the tensions that Native Hawaiians have faced as they try to forge a healthy identity in the face of ongoing colonialism? Give clear examples from the film and the book and remember to include, cite, and define key terms.

 

 

Paper Requirements:

  1. The paper needs to be 2.5-3pgs long, double spaced, with one-inch margins in Times New Roman font.
  2. It needs to be submitted as a docx file to Blackboard by Midnight on Friday. (no pdfs, pages, etc, accepted).
  3. You need to cite. When you terms define and cite them w/ page number if its from a reading. When you use specific examples cite them. Use in text citations (Author Year; Page#) ex – (Perry 2013: 282). If its specifically from lecture cite the lecture video.
  4. Use a cover sheet for your name, assignment etc (not included in page count).
  5. Do not use endnotes or footnotes.

 

 

 

Points Rubric:

60 points – Clarity – Is the essay clear and well organized? Can I follow the direction of the narrative? Does it highlight the tensions that exist around your topic in a way that feels cohesive and natural?

 

60 points – Course Connections – Are you both citing specific ideas and generally engaging with the kinds of issues that we have discusses in class.

 

30 points – Editing – Proper usage of words and grammar. Proper Citations. Proper Formatting. Required Length.

 

 

Writing Tips

  1. Engage the material – you are trying to show me that you read and can understand the material and that you can apply course concepts. Remember its not an opinion piece.
  2. Use the articles, lecture videos, and documentaries together.
  3. Do not use long quotes. This should be in your own words.
  4. Define and Cite.
  5. Bring in outside examples only if they can help you explain a point you are trying to make.
