Crisis Management has become a norm or an expectation within organizations. Utilizing one of
the theories discussed in chapter 5 explore the response that would occur based on the theory.

Write a 2-3 page paper describing your response based on the theory selected.

I know the week three written essay can seem a little overwhelming (I’ve already received a few
questions about it), so I thought I would provide the following information in hopes that it will
make the essay a little easier to accomplish.

The first thing you need to do is read chapter 5. In Chapter 5 (5-7), it will define a crisis for the
purposes of this class. The assignment does not identify a certain kind of crisis, just talks about
leaders dealing with crises in general. If it makes it easier for you, you can add an imaginary
crisis situation to your essay for application (of the theory you choose).
Next, it will describe nine leadership behaviors associated with successfully leading an
organization through a crisis. While the instructions don’t mention these specifically, I would
recommend you work these into your essay.
Next, the assignment instructions list three crisis management theories; information about each is
also in chapter five. The three theories include.
○ LMX (Leader-Member Exchange)-5-6- “…Leader–Member Exchange theory
[is when leaders adapt] their style to different individuals within the group, or
have different quality relationships with individual group members, are essentially
practicing contingency leadership.”
○ Contingency-5-1through 5-2-e- (this is a very complicated theory that some say
really does not/should not be used in crisis management unless the leader is
highly skilled)- Contingency theory asserts there is no single best method to lead
a company and that decisions should be made contingent on circumstances.
Researchers say this applies in crisis management situations because crises are
fluid, complex, and uncertain. Crisis managers must adapt their response to make
it contingent upon the situation.

path-goal theory of leadership effectiveness specifies what a leader must do to achieve high
productivity and morale in a given situation. In general, a leader attempts to clarify the path to a
goal for a group member, so the group member receives personal payoffs. At the same time, this
group member’s job satisfaction and performance increase.”
