The CDC and Healthy People 2020 continue to educate on the importance, the improved ease of access and insurance coverage for screenings and vaccinations. It is the responsibility of nurses to engage our ageing adults in self-advocating for services that benefit the individual and community health. How can you, as a registered nurse, impact older adults to encourage routine vaccination? What impact does this have on the community as a whole?

Vaccination at all points in life improves the immune system’s ability to fight off diseases. Over the years, most of the vaccination information and mechanics have been the focus of pediatric care. As the demographics for health change with a bulging aging population compared to the narrowing of the younger population, interventions to improve health as people age have been sought. One of the ways to improve the quality of life is to reduce the rate that infectious diseases occur in the population. Protecting the elderly from infections such as influenza, human papilloma, and other viruses can be done using vaccinations.
