[Answered] “Voices Unheard” & “The Rise and Fall (and Rise) of Economic Tension” An Examination of Race and Class in Literature
Description
Over the course of the first four weeks of this course you will be focusing primarily on two topics, that of ethnicity and economic class in literature. While the two are clearly related, in a 100 level course, the intricacies are quite difficult to decode, and would take much more time than an 8-week course can provide! With that being said, the first essay this semester will ask that you answer one of the two below questions, utilizing multiples texts from the class, and outside sources IF YOU SO CHOOSE. Please note that if you use outside sources, they should be used sparingly, as we are focusing primarily on literary analysis in this course, which is much different than English 1A and/or English 1B.
To scaffold these questions, we must first discuss the purpose of these literary texts. As you have read, I hope that the amount of difficulty the black community has faced, and continues to face, is evident, but most importantly — I hope you see some of the catharsis and optimism that is also present (specifically in some of the poetry, and to a lesser extent, the short stories). Each of the texts we have read focus on pain, the ways in which it demands to be felt, and the various ways it comes to the surface. In weeks 3 and 4, we’ll focus on how this pain is cross-dimensional, also felt through economic struggle (meaning people trying to rise up in society in terms of economic class).
The Limits and Pressures of Mobilizing Oneself in Modern Society
For this option, your task is to write a 3-4 page analysis that focuses on the intersection of struggle present in both the ethnicity unit and economics unit in our course. You will be focusing on Aristotle’s concept of pity and fear, comparing and contrasting how oppression based around race and ethnicity is similar and/or different from economic oppression. This essay should examine the argument that systems in modern society have (and/or are) preventing individuals from freedom and security, and is rooted in the idea that pity and fear are core tenets of ideas presented in these texts. Please note that the essay should be 3-4 pages, contain 5-8 sources, engage in complex analysis that connects back to the modern world, and have a clear thesis and argument. Please note that you may bend the question into your own idea/argument if you see fit, and feel free to message me if you have an idea you would like to chase with this idea.
Also, the prompt asks to either relate or contrast racial and economic oppression, which side were you planning to choose? Comparing or contrasting the two?
Solution
Based on Aristotle’s concept of fear and pity, the paper compares how racial and ethnic oppression is similar to economic oppression. In most cases, racial oppression is inseparable from economic oppression, as observed in our modern society. Most people who are oppressed based on their racial and ethnic backgrounds have limited access to opportunities that would elevate them economically……….Purchase the link to access the full answer @ $ 12
