[Answered] Demonstrate a critical understanding of research methods by evaluating the evidence base for a selected method of intervention which was used in your placement setting.
Description
You need to include practice placement setting. The setting was an inner London council, Children with Disabilities team or CWD team for short. The service users were children from 0 – 18 years that had learning disabilities, a physical or sensory impairment, who have particular mental health difficulties or in some cases a mixture.
Guidance
You will need to introduce your practice placement setting briefly. Do not name the organisation. The setting that shall be referred to is an inner London council, Children with Disabilities team or CWD team for short. The service users were children from 0 – 18 years that had learning disabilities, a physical or sensory impairment, who have particular mental health difficulties or in some cases a mixture.
Identify your selected method of intervention and explain how it was used in your placement setting.
Refer to research studies concerning the use of the method of intervention and its effectiveness. Show your understanding of research issues by evaluating the research and critically applying the research findings to your placement. You should base your assignment on two research studies.
Come to a conclusion about the extent to which the use of the method of intervention in your placement is supported by the research evidence.
This is an academic essay with credit given for coherence of analysis and choice of research studies. Please note that you must use two relevant research studies.
NB: you may be surprised that this longer essay guides you to use only two research studies, whereas the shorter essay one says you can use two or three texts. This is deliberate, and is because the task of evaluating research and applying the analysis to your placement organisation requires more words.
Expanding on the above
Please note the requirement to use two research studies. If you refer to only one research study then you will be marked down, potentially heavily, and run a serious risk of being given a Fail grade.
Warning: this assignment addresses learning outcome 3) which is:
Demonstrate an understanding of research methods by evaluating the evidence base for a selected method of intervention in social work practice.
In other words, your task is to demonstrate that you have an understanding of research matters. It is not an essay about the theory of your chosen method of intervention. Any words which you use discussing theoretical type aspects of your chosen method are words which you cannot use for the main task of the assignment, which is, to repeat, your understanding of research itself.
For the purposes of this module and the assignment, “research” means a study where the authors themselves have collected data either from human subjects or about human subjects.
Thus, and for example, “collecting data from human subjects” could be achieved by getting people to complete a questionnaire, take part in interviews or focus groups, or by observing people as they conduct an aspect of your lives. All the information collected by these means are called “data”. (A single piece of information is “datum”, plural is “data” it’s a Latin word.)
“Collecting data about human subjects” means using data which are already available. For example, the University holds a good deal of data about you as an individual student, and therefore about the whole student body at Kingston – information such as your date of birth, gender, ethnicity, academic achievement etc.
A researcher could look at these data with a view to answering some question – eg what is the achievement of men compared with women? or, students in their 20’s compared with those in their 40’s? This example would count as research according to the definition above, as it is using existing data about people.
Note that this definition of “research” means that you cannot use what are known as “meta-analyses”. A meta-analysis involves the author(s) of the meta-analysis looking at all relevant previous research about a specific issue, using complicated statistical techniques to come to an overall conclusion about the overall messages about the issue. So, different studies usually come to slightly different conclusions, and the meta-analysis combines all these statistically to say what the overall best knowledge is at that moment in time.
The reasons why it is NOT appropriate for you to include a meta-analysis in this module assignment are:
In writing the meta-analysis, the author(s) do not undertake their own research – they re-evaluate previous research.
In evaluating previous research, the author(s) engage in critical analysis of that previous research, and one of the main tasks for you in this module is to enhance your ability to critically analyse and review research. A meta-analysis does this work for you, and so is of no help to you.
Solution
This assignment shall be demonstrating a critical understanding of research methods by evaluating the evidence base on a particular method of intervention used in a recent placement setting. The setting that shall be referred to is an inner London council, Children with Disabilities Team, or CWD team for short. The service users were children from 0 – 18 years that had learning disabilities, a physical or sensory impairment, who have particular mental health difficulties, or in some cases a mixture. This assignment aims to establish why the intervention method of out-of-school respite services is a common tool used with CWD service users. To support the learning, two research studies will be used whilst critically evaluating their validity and effectiveness…………..Purchase the link to access the full answer @$15
