Extra Credit Assignment
Book Review Anecdotes of an Arab Anglophile by Faisal J. Abbas. This assignment is NOT mandatory and can be completed by any student that wishes to.
Objective:
For this extra credit assignment, you will read Anecdotes of an Arab Anglophile by Faisal J. Abbas and write a 500–700-word book review. This engaging and thought-provoking book explores the intersections of Arab and Western cultures, offering unique insights through the personal experiences of the author, a well-known Arab journalist and Anglophile. This correlates with the readings and activities we have done in class in regard to intercultural communication and diverse audiences.
By completing this assignment, you will earn 3 extra credit points towards your final grade.
Assignment Instructions:
- Read the book: Immerse yourself in the humorous, and insightful reflections of Faisal J. Abbas as he navigates life as an Arab Anglophile.
- Write a 500–700-word book review that includes:
- Provide a brief overview of the book, including the author, the main themes, and the book’s purpose.
- Analysis and audience: Discuss the key takeaways from the book. What did you find most interesting? How does the author balance Arab and Western perspectives? Who is the primary, secondary, and tertiary audience intended to be?
- Personal Reflection: Connect the book to your own experiences, ideas and learnings in class. How did it challenge your views or expand your understanding of cultural differences and similarities?
- Conclusion: Summarize your thoughts on the book and whether or not you would recommend it to others. Why or why not?
- Submit by November 30, 2024: Make sure your review is well-organized, clearly written, and meets the 500-700 word requirement. No Deadline Extensions.
Grading Criteria (1 point each):*
- Complete and analyze all four mandatory parts of the review (A-D)
- Use your own language and analyze all parts of the assignment
- No grammar, spelling or structural errors
